Description

A unique exhibition of furniture ranging from the Baroque, Biedermeier and Historicist eras to the Vienna Modern movement and contemporary Austrian furniture design.

Still regarded as something of an insider’s tip, this museum with a display area of 4,000 m² allows the visitor to stroll through past eras of imperial furnishing styles. Alongside exhibits of sublime magnificence and beauty visitors also encounter many a curious object – for example, a large collection of imaginatively designed commodes.

One of the most popular sections is the permanent exhibition Sissi in the Movies – Imperial Furniture for the Sets.

Last but not least, the Vienna Furniture Museum also focuses on the development of furnishing styles outside the Viennese court. From Biedermeier to the present day all eras are represented, with designs by outstanding Austrian artists such as Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann and Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION - HERE WE ARE! Women in Design 1900 – Today

2024/03/01 - 2024/06/30

Presenting women designers from the past 120 years, the exhibition tells a new, multi-voiced story of design against the background of the struggle for equal rights. It showcases works by some 80 women designers, including modernist icons such as Eileen Gray, Charlotte Perriand, Lilly Reich and Clara Porset, plus entrepreneurs such as Florence Knoll and Armi Ratia, as well as lesser-known figures such as the social reformer Jane Addams. Contemporary positions are represented by designers such as Matali Crasset, Patricia Urquiola, Julia Lohmann and the Matri-Archi(tecture) and Futuress collectives, taking visitors into the present and future.

The "Here We Are! Frauen im Design 1900 – Today" exhibition is as diverse as the discussions of feminism in our society today. Offering a fresh timely look at the history of modern design and current debates, it provides food for thought about what design should be in the twenty-first century, who defines it and who it is for.

The temporary exhibition is accompanied by a varied fringe programme.
